Toronto Police say a gunman opened fire inside Michael’s On Simcoe Restaurant — on Simcoe St., south of Adelaide StW— shortly before 9 p.m., killing Simon Giannini and sending patrons running for their lives. And it’s not the first time blood has been spilled inside Michael’s. The killer entered the restaurant, approached the 54-year-old as he sat at a table with another person and “shot him several times,” DetShannon Dawson said Sunday. She said the gunman, who was wearing a dark hoodie pulled tightly around his face and jogging pants, fled the restaurant and was last seen heading west on Pearl Stin a white SUV. As many as 150 people were inside the popular steakhouse when the gunshots rang out. “I’m sure it was very frightening for the customers who were at the restaurant,” Dawson said“And that’s why we think many of them may have fled very quickly.” She urged any patrons who were in the restaurant at the time and have not yet spoken to police to come forward. Sources confirm the victim is the same Simon Giannini who worked for Royal LePage and has hosted real estate talk shows on local radio and television stations. Giannini leaves behind his wife Cozette, who ran in the 2014 municipal election but lost to Ward 39 Councillor Jim Karygiannis, and two children. Dawson said the murder appears to have been “targeted,” but she admitted it’s not yet known why someone would want Giannini dead. Almost two years ago — on Sept20, 2015 — two gunmen opened fire on a couple sitting at a table enjoying their dinner. The man was shot in his neck, the woman was hit in her hip, but both survived. However, Dawson said there is nothing at this point to suggest the two restaurant shootings are connected. On Monday, Mayor John Tory called the killing deeply disturbing. "We're working every day with our police service to make sure that this remains the safest city in North America," Tory said"And when these kinds of targeted shootings take place, they're very regrettable, they're very unfortunate, and they're you know shocking to people, but I think they don't take away from the fact that this remains a very safe city and we're determined to make sure that it stays exactly that way."  Giannini’s killing also came less than 24 hours after another man — now identified as Everone Paul Mitchell, 54 — was gunned down in Regent Park, bringing the murder tally to 41 for the year. And 10 of those victims — seven of whom were shot dead — have occurred in the last month. Despite the recent spike in murders, InspBryan Bott said the number of shootings and homicides overall in 2017 are “consistent with recent years.” “What is concerning, though, is that some of these killings are very targeted, extremely violent and happening in public places,” the head of the homicide unit said, adding it’s just a matter of luck that no innocent bystanders have been hurt. In the last month, 10 people have been murdered in the city:  •Aug19 — Virgil Jack, 31, was found stabbed to death and partially submerged in a river in Derrydowns Park, near Jane Stand Finch AveW., in North YorkIt’s believed she may have been killed a day earlierNo arrests have been made. •Aug20 — Khadr Mohamed, 22, was gunned down at College and Lippincott Sts., just east of Bathurst StNo arrests have been made. •Aug22 — A man was stabbed to death in an apartment, near Jane Stand Eddystone Ave., south of Finch AveWOne man was arrested. •Aug31 — Jovane Clarke, 22, was shot to death inside the Sheridan Mall at Jane Stand Wilson AveNo arrests have been made. •Sept2 — Awad Hurre, 34, was gunned down inside the lobby of a highrise on Tandridge Cr., near Albion Rdand Islington Ave., in RexdaleNo arrests have been made. •Sept3: Cuhapiryan Mahendrarajah, 33, was found with obvious signs of trauma, near Eglinton and Danforth Aves., in Scarborough, and died later in hospitalProsper Jean Laurent, 18, is charged with second-degree murder. •Sept13: A woman, 24, was found dead inside a home, near Village Greenway and Parkway Forest Dr., northeast of Don Mills Rdand Hwy401Yeshudyan Ragbir, 24, is charged with first-degree murder. •Sept14 — Anthony Soares, 33, was gunned down in the lobby of an apartment building at Kennedy Rdand Glamorgan Ave., just north of Ellesmere RdNo arrests have been made. •Sept16 — A man, 54, was shot dead near Gerrard and River Sts., in Regent ParkNo arrests have been made. •Sept16 — A man was gunned down inside Michael’s restaurant on Simcoe St., just south of Adelaide StW., in the Entertainment DistrictNo arrests have been made.
