Hayward is a small fishing town located next to Namekagon River and has a population of 2,318Each year the town transforms into a winter wonderland to celebrate the festive season. Named ‘A Lure of Lights’ it’s become a very popular destination for residents of Wisconsin to visit in order to get into the holiday spiritIn fact, it’s becoming so popular it’s attracting people from other states. The festival is run completely by volunteers and is funded solely by donations – talk about Christmas spirit! Now in its seventh year, ‘A Lure of Lights’ was originally created in 2010 by two friends who say they, “wanted to see Hayward shine brighter than it already did.” In an effort that would leave even Clark Griswold impressed, the entire town gets involved and covers the buildings in twinkle lights. Image: A Lure of Lights The transformation occurs the day after Thanksgiving, so instead of hitting up the black Friday sales, the residents are hard at work making the town a magical placeThe lights stay up until December 30. However, the festival is about much more than fairy lights: you can pet real reindeer (!), sample plenty of holiday treats, watch parades and take part in various competitions. Another drawcard is the ‘Hot Chocolate Crawl’ that’s like a pub crawl, but for hot chocolateThere are apparently many, many different varieties to try. Santa pops by from time to time, so kids can get a photo and tell him what’s on their listsThere’s a chili cook-off day, and for those who prefer a traditional pub crawl, there’s an evening called ‘Beer, Cheer and Lights!’.
