BUTTE, Mont- In just two weeks the cost of registering your vehicle will go upJust how much more it will cost depends on the age of your car or truck.Butte-Silver Bow’s motor vehicle supervisor, Cara Barnes, said lawmakers approved the hikes last legislative session.Barnes said gas taxes were already raised July 1 to 4.5 cents more per gallon, and it's something lawmakers were considering raising againInstead, Barns said lawmakers decided on a 3-percent increase across the board for all motor vehicle transactions starting Jan1.Barnes said if you own a new vehicle less than four years old there will be an $8.24 increase on registration feesFor cars five to 10 years old it will be a $4.71 increaseFor cars 11 years or older, it will increase $2.57.She also said registrations include a fee for the Montana Highway Patrol increasing from $5 to $10If you want a temporary registration on a new vehicle that price will go from $3 to $19.50.Barnes said the increases won't come cheap compared to some other states."I've heard from customers that Oregon is super cheap on their vehicle registrations, but they are shocked when they come to Montana,” Barnes said.Montana's current base registration fees are $217 for vehicles four years or younger, $87 for vehicles five to ten years old and $28 for vehicles older than eleven yearsThat's before the 3-percent increases are added, excluding state and county fees.Despite the increases Butte resident Jacob Newby is understanding."If that's what they need to do to make things work, then that's what they need to do,” Newby said.Regardless, Barnes said the fees are unavoidable for Montana's Motor Vehicle Office."The money is going to run our department as far as personnel, computer programming, computers themselves, and of course the products that we give our customers to be registered and legal on the streets,” Barnes said. There is also something called a Ferrari tax for luxury vehicles and motor homesIf you have a car valued at $150,000 or more that is 10 years old or less, it will cost an additional $825 to registerIf you have a motor home less than 11 years old and valued at $300,000 or more, you’ll be paying an additional $800.
