Every animal that comes through a shelter’s doors has an uncertain future."I adopted a guinea pig for my sister,” Cami Knight said.But for the first time, the odds of leaving the Kansas Humane Society in the arms of a new family have never been better.Last year the shelter found homes for more than 11,000 animalsThat's 93% of all the pets brought into the shelter."About 50 percent of them come from people that bring in their animalsThat have to relinquish them for various reasonsSometimes they're movingSometimes they've had a change in their lifestyle or things happen that they have to relinquish the animal or there's been an incident with the animal, that they can no longer care for it,” President and CEO of the Kansas Humane Society, Mark Eby said.Eby said the other half are strays and come from the cityHe says the success is in part due to its facilityIt was built in 2009 and designed to showcase the animals in a clean and comfortable environment for the pets and the visitors."I think it's awesome being able to save that many, I mean yeah, I think it's great,” Knight said.The shelter works with foster homes and rescues to help find homes for all the pets."We don't turn anybody awayWe take every single animal that is brought to us, provided it's a dog, cat or small mammal, and we care for it as best we canTry and find a home for it as best we can,” Eby said.If you do lose your pet, the Wichita Animal Shelter is the first place you should look for itAnd just in case a family is looking for their pet, the shelter waits three days before placing them up for adoption."That would be our ultimate goal is to have every animal stay with the owner that they came in with because obviously they're accustomed to that home, they're familiar with itSo, we want to try and continue to make that happen if possible,” Eby said.Out of all the animals saved, more than 400 of them were reunited with their original owners.The shelter says more than 300 animals have been adopted this month. wnad_52.load();
