According to Curbed Detroit, an ordinance passed last year by the city restricts homeowners in certain districts from renting their houses out went into effect this week. Specifically, the ordinance says "use of a dwelling to accommodate paid overnight guests is prohibited as a home occupation; notwithstanding this regulation, public accommodations, including bed and breakfast inns outside the R1 and R2 Districts, are permitted as provided in Sec61-12-46 of this Code." According to Curbed, the majority of Airbnb units for rent in the city are in in the R1 and R2 Districts, however the ordinance ensures people outside those districts cannot rent out their properties. Last year, Detroit was the most visited Airbnb city in the state of Michigan with 47,000 guest arrivals for earnings of $5.21 million.
