The Oklahoma State Home Builders Association inducted four prominent builders into its hall of fame — one posthumously — as well as U.SSenJim Inhofe at its annual inaugural. From the Oklahoma City area, W.P"Bill" Atkinson, who founded Midwest City and is credited with landing Oklahoma City what is now Tinker Air Force Base, was inducted, as was Carter ForeeAtkinson died in 1999. From the Tulsa area, Burr Kannady and Howard Kelsey were inducted. Atkinson, a builder and developer, helped form the National Association of Home Builders and was its president in 1951, and was one of the founders of the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association. He was founder of The Oklahoma Journal, which published from 1963 to 1979He entered the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1963 and was in the inaugural 1990 class of Pathmakers recognized annually by the Oklahoma City/County Historical Society. Foree, a developer with Coyle Enterprises, has been instrumental in developing strong relations with housing and local governments in central OklahomaHe has served on the Central Oklahoma Home Builders Association's Government Affairs Committee since 1994, and was that group's Builder of the Year in 1994, and president in 1998. He was the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association's Legislative Committee Chairman from 1998-2003, has been chairman of its Developers Council Chair since 2012, was president in 1999, and Builder of the Year in 1999. Kannady, an associate member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa for 45 years, has been the "Volunteer of Volunteers," the state group saidHe was Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa Associate of the Year in 1978, chairman of its Home & Garden Show Committee in 1982, Associate of the Month numerous times, and founder of the Spirit Award in 1987. He was the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association Associate of the Year in 1985, and Spike of the Year in 1993He was named to the National Association of Home Builders's Society of Honored Associates in 1985 and 1992He served on the Tulsa City-County Electrical Examination & Appeals Board from 1982 to 2002. Kelsey, a self-described “niche” builder, got his start in housing when he was 8, learning from his father and mentor, Lester KelseyKelsey has overseen the evolution of Kelsey Construction Co., which built tract homes in the 1960s, into a builder of luxury homes and commercial projects. He was Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa Builder of the Year in 1980, Builder of the Month six times, president in 1986, received the Presidential Award of Excellence in 1987, and the Don Herrington Award in 2012He created 42 episodes of television vignettes called "Your Home" in 1981He was Oklahoma State Home Builders Association Builder of the Year in 1990, and president in 1991. Inhofe "has been a champion for the homebuilding industry," the state group said"As a former builder and developer, Jim understands the issues affecting the industry and has been one of its strongest proponents..(He is) a champion for restoring common sense and sound science to important environmental and regulatory issues like clean air mandates, wetlands and endangered species." He was a state representative then senator from 1967 to 1977, mayor of Tulsa from 1978 to 1984, U.Srepresentative from 1986 to 1994 and has been a U.Ssenator since 1994He was chairman of the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee from 2003 to 2007, and from 2015 to presentThe National Association of Home Builders recognized him as a Defender of Housing in 2016.
