I have three parakeets, and my real estate agent says the birds should be out of the home until it’s sold

We have found friends to watch our birds, but they can’t do this for us for very long

Depending on when the house sells, they may have to bring our birds back to us

We are not sure what to do

Are there places in San Antonio that “kennel” birds? Don Dear Don, Real estate agents suggest this all the time because they think the house will sell faster

And maybe it does, but that doesn’t mean you have to listen to them. It’s still your house and your pets

Birds shouldn’t be moved around a lot

So, if the real estate agent won’t sell your home unless the birds are gone, find a new agent. When your friend can no longer keep your birds, bring them back to your house and keep them in a bedroom instead of a main room

People usually just peek into the bedrooms to determine size and closet size, so they won’t be disturbed much there. If you need to kennel your birds, there are several bird hospitals and a pet resort that popped up on my online search for “bird kennels San Antonio.” Call them to check on the cost and comforts. Dear Cathy, My dog Jake pulls hard on the leash

It’s impossible to walk him

Is there anything I can do to get him to walk next to me? Warren Dear Warren, Teaching a dog to heel (stay by your side) is an advanced command

If you have mastered sit and stay, you can begin teaching your dog to heel. Put your dog’s leash in your left hand and keep treats in your right hand

Hold the treats near your dog’s face and say heel, giving him a treat every step or if he stays by your side. If he begins to pull ahead, quickly turn into him (to the left) or swing to the right and walk the other direction

Initially, you will be going in circles

But he will think you are crazy and that he must pay close attention to you to see where you are going. If you don’t think you can master this technique, sign up for a dog training class where a trainer can help you practice. You can also try walking him on a Gentle Leader or Haltie head collar, which fit over the dog’s nose and redirect his head to prevent him from pulling

There are videos online to teach you how to use these collars. Send your pet questions, tips and stories to cathy@petpundit.com
