CHARLESTOWN — The Patricia Sprague Forest Preserve real estate closing came to fruition on May 25 as a result of collaborative efforts among the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the Charlestown Land Trust, town representatives, and the landowners.
The 27.8-acre parcel is located near Carolina Back Road and Railroad Avenue and was owned by Mark and Peter Sprague, sons of Patricia Sprague, for whom the preserve is namedMark Sprague will continue to live in the family house on acreage that was excluded from the preserve

The agreed-upon price of $600,000 was paid for with $341,250 from the town’s Open Space Bond and $258,750 from a Rhode Island Natural Heritage Grant
“It was a good collaboration: It was the only way pieces of property like this get preserved and it spreads the financial responsibility,” said Karen Jarrett, acting executive director of the Charlestown Land Trust.
