Over the past four years, during one of the worst economic recessions to ever hit the Flathead Valley, Canadians' vacationed, visited, and even moved south The crash of the housing market made real-estate prices more than reasonable for Albertans, who average an annual household income of more that of double Flathead Valley residents University of Lethbridge Donna Townley economics professor Donna Townley recently addressed a Kalispell Chamber of Commerce meeting and said Canadians have money to spend and they are spending it here. "That's my opinion is that, it's the Canadian tourism, the Canadian dollars, whether it's the one coming for the weekend, or it's the one that's got the residence, the one that's coming down here on a regular basis. It's those dollars that are being spent The local little coffee shop there at the gas station on Highway 93, he said it wasn't for Canadians, he couldn't keep his coffee shop going." "The very first [reason] is the majestic Montana, when you look at Calgary, you've got a fast bustling city, Lethbridge, you don't have anything to do in the summer, there's no lakes, there's not a lot of trees, and we come here for the beautiful majestic Montana," Townley added. Moreover she said that Canadians are spending tons of money on large ticket items in Montana. "Canadian's have a different mindset of how they spend their money, and they want the best value for their dollar earned And right now that best value is in the Flathead Valley." Canadians are buying boats, houses and vehicles and are buying them in the Flathead Townley explained the biggest reason is that the average household income in the Flathead is just over $40,000 while in Alberta, it's over $80,000 a year. So like it or not, Canadians in the Flathead are here to stay and Townley told us, the reception has been warm. if(((navigator.userAgent.match(/Android/i)) && (userAgent.search("mobile") > -1)) || navigator.userAgent.match(/webOS/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/iPhone/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/iPod/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/BlackBerry/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/Windows Phone/i) ) { document.write (""); } else { document.write(""); document.write("if (!window.OX_ads) { OX_ads = []; }"); document.write("OX_ads.push({ \"auid\" : \"547471\" });"); document.write(""); document.write(""); document.write("document.write('');"); document.write(""); document.write(""); } »Comments »Topics in this article Canada› Tourism› Boom› Flathead› Economy› // (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1&appId=275653362547695"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); OX_4f2af59038f63.showAdUnit("128267"); Top Videos Play 16 minutes ago 5:30 Sports ON DEMAND 2.5.15 Play More 5:30 News ON DEMAND 2.5.15 Play 5:30 News ON DEMAND 2.5.15 Play Noon News ON DEMAND: 2.5.15 Play Community Spotlight: 2.5,15 Play World Cancer Day: Billings survivor reflects on her journey Play Morning News ON DEMAND: 2.5.15 Play 10:00 Sports ON DEMAND: 2.4.15 Play 10:00 News ON DEMAND: 2.4.15 Play More 10:00 News ON DEMAND: 2.4.15 Play Ex-cons Returning to Society: A community issue Play 5:30 Sports ON DEMAND 2.4.15 Play More 5:30 News ON DEMAND 2.4.15 Play 5:30 News ON DEMAND 2.4.15 Play Evening ON DEMAND weather: 2.4.15 Play 99-year-old eastern MT woman works towards healthy heart 1 2 3 4 $(function(){ $('.videothumbsnav span').click(function(){ idx = $('.videothumbsnav span').index($(this)); console.log('test ' + idx); $('.videothumbsnav span').removeClass('active'); $('.videothumbsnav span').eq(idx).addClass('active'); $('.videothumbs .row').removeClass('active'); $('.videothumbs .row').eq(idx).addClass('active'); }); }); If this tag is to be placed on an SSL page, change the * 'http://ox-d.cordillera.tv/...' * to * 'https://ox-d.cordillera.tv/...' */ --> document.write(''); OX.requestAd({"auid":"128268"}); Most Popular Viewed mp = new MostPopular('mostpopular_9E3E79FB98AC82147E3D6AA17F3A85AB', { contentType: 1 ,itemsToShow: 5 ,tagsToShow: 50 ,spanUnit: 'ww' ,spanValue: 1 ,hasViewed: 1 ,hasCommented: 0 ,hasRated: 0 ,hasTagged: 0 ,showCounts: 1 }); MP_BindEvents(mp); if(((navigator.userAgent.match(/Android/i)) && (navigator.userAgent.search("Mobile") > -1)) || navigator.userAgent.match(/webOS/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/iPhone/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/iPod/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/BlackBerry/i) || navigator.userAgent.match(/Windows Phone/i) ) { document.write (""); } else { document.write(""); document.write("if (!window.OX_ads) { OX_ads = []; }"); document.write("OX_ads.push({ \"auid\" : \"128266\" });"); document.write(""); document.write(""); document.write("document.write('');"); document.write(""); document.write(""); } Sign up for our newsletter Like us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter @kpaxnews Follow @kpaxnews !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+'://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs'); News On Special Assignment Crime News Court News Flathead County Coverage Firewatch Montana Health News Montana Politics Good Question EconTracker BOLO Alerts Sports Missoula Osprey Prep Game of the Week Griz Video High School Sports Video Sports Video KPAX/KAJ Sports on Facebook Weather StormTracker 7-Day Forecast StormTracker Doppler Radar Interactive Radar On-Demand Forecast Current Conditions Montana Temperatures Cameras StormTracker Weather on Facebook Community Home Services Contest Montana This Morning Contests One Class at a Time Morning Rounds Used Autos Obituaries Open Houses Inside KPAX Videos Firewatch Video Newscast on Demand Sports Video Griz Video Good Question Prep Game of the Week On KPAX FCC Public Files KPAX Programming Closed Captioning Jobs/EEO Files KPAX Staff Register with KPAX.com
